Algorithms have been described as the beating heart of the internet. They are key to a gigantic part of our daily online activities, yet few people really understand their nature or role. As with much technology, algorithms have both benefits and bad sides, and because they are working invisibly behind the scenes (and  shrouded in commercial secrecy), it is all the more important to understand the basics of how they operate. This knowledge will help guide youth in their online activities and empower them to take part in the growing public debate about the role and regulation of “algos” in society.
